Seattle Clear Alleys Program

The City of Seattle is partnering with local waste collection companies and downtown businesses and residents to reduce waste containers in the public right-of–way. The goals of the program are to:

  • Create cleaner, safer business districts
  • Reduce uncivil behaviors and illegal activities in alleys
  • Increase the attractiveness of alleys for pedestrian use
  • Allow better alley access for business services such as deliveries

The City of Seattle has designated Pioneer Square as a “Clear Alleys” Business District. Beginning March 30, 2009, garbage and recycling containers can only be placed in public alleyways for restricted time periods.

As the City’s service provider for Pioneer Square, Waste Management offers prepaid bag service to residents and businesses as an alternative to containers and carts stored in public alleys.
